SWPPP Runoff, Erosion, and Sediment Controls

Site supervisors play a critical role in implementing the SWPPP (pronounced “swip”) for a construction project by inspecting and maintaining many of the Best Management Practices (BMPs) on the jobsite. This course covers the first three types of BMPs - the ones that control runoff, erosion, and sediment.

Audience:   Construction

Duration:   1 hour

Learning objectives:

  • Explain how development and construction increase runoff, erosion, and sedimentation, and how these issues affect U.S. waters. Identify the BMPs used to control runoff, erosion, and sediment on the jobsite to prevent stormwater pollution.
  • Check the BMPs that control runoff to make sure they're working as designed to control the amount and speed of runoff from the jobsite.
  • Check the BMPs that control erosion to confirm that they're working as designed to keep soil from eroding.
  • Check the BMPs that keep sediment from leaving the jobsite and entering waterways.
